Summer Listening: Chance the Rapper’s ‘Coloring Book’

It’s fitting that the intro track for Chance the Rapper’s third full-length mixtape is titled “All We Got,” because for the many hip-hop fans looking for feel-good summer music, this tape is all you will ever need. Where Drake’s VIEWS was brooding, and Kanye’s The Life of Pablo felt like peak performance art, Chance’s Coloring Book is a more traditional summer album. Feel good melodies and crescendos with everything Chance knows well: gospel choirs, horns, and sing-song lyrics (like No Problem’s chorus of “You don’t want no problem/want no problem with me”). Coloring Book sounds like a Sunday BBQ lunch after church in July. It’s innocent, mischevious, thoughtful, and optimistic but perhaps best of all, it’s something that will sound even better played outdoors or in a convertible. And isn’t that what we really want in our Summer music? Sure, the substance and message matters, but after one listen, you’re really looking for music that will just sound good in those moments.

Highlight tracks include the 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne feature “No Problem”, “Blessings”, “Angels”, and perhaps the hardest Chance track yet to date featuring Young Thug and Lil Yachty (LIL BOAT) “Mixtape.”
